Integra Shear Wall Design®
Specifications & Installation of Integra Shear walls©

1.0 SUBJECT
For construction of Integra Shear Wall panels an assumption of fasteners used are “Buildex Fasteners” for application of Plywood/OSB Panel Integra Shear Walls and Integra Diaphragm panels, where “Buildex Fasteners” or other comparable fasteners are used to attach structural sheathing to Integra Steel Framing Members such as Integra Wall Studs, Integra Floor Joist or Integra roof framing members. All Integra members used in shear or diaphragm construction must have minimum yield strength of 33 ksi (228 kPa) and a minimum tensile strength of 52 ksi (359 kPa). Integra Steel joists for diaphragms must comply or be comparable with the Canadian NCBC code and must be suitable for the direct support of Integra floors and Integra roof decks. The fasteners used in Integra light steel framing are limited for use with diaphragms framed with cold-formed framing members and must comply or be comparable to, Division VII, Chapter 22, of the Canadian 1997 Uniform Building Code™ (UBC). Recognition of the fasteners for use with heavier steel, common to open-web steel joists referenced in Section 3, Division IX, Chapter 22, of the UBC, is beyond the scope of this Integra Manual.

2.0 DESCRIPTION

2.1 General:
The fasteners suggested in this Integra Shear Wall Manual are “Buildex fasteners” which can either a screw type or can be pneumatically or gas power driven to attach plywood/OSB structural panels to Integra light gage steel framing for Integra shear wall and Integra horizontal diaphragm applications. The fasteners recommended, as well as most other fasteners are limited to locations not exposed to the weather or damp environments. (See also ICBO Evaluation Service, Inc. report) of which is not to be construed as representing aesthetics or any other attributes not specifically addressed, nor are they to be construed as an endorsement of the subject of this manual or a recommendation for its use. There is no warranty by ICBO Evaluation Service, Inc., express or implied, as to any finding or other matter in this Integra Manual, or as to any other product covered or recommended in this Integra Manual.

    2.2 Materials:

    2.2.1 Fasteners:
All fasteners used in the construction of an Integra Shear Wall are to be manufactured from AISI C 1030 steel and heat-treated to a Rockwell C hardness of 45 to 50. Minimum tensile strength is 210 ksi (1,447 MPa). All fasteners used in an Integra Shear Wall are to have a tapered helical point and annular threading on the shank. The fasteners used shall have a shank diameter of minimum (3 mm) and in a length of either (38.1 or 44.5 mm). The fastener head is either a (6.9 mm) flat head or (7.9 mm) bugle head. Any fasteners used in an Integra Shear Wall with a flat head are to be zinc plated with a chromate finish, and fasteners with a bugle head are to have a cathodic-epoxy electro-coating over an electro plated zinc coating.

2.2.2 Plywood/OSB Sheathing for Integra Shear Walls:
Plywood panels must comply with Canadian UBC Standard 23-2, and be capable of supporting vertical loads in accordance with the panel span rating shown in the Canadian CNBC code. Plywood/OSB panels used for Integra Shear Walls must have span ratings appropriate for the Integra stud spacing being used in the shear wall framing.

    2.2.3 Steel Framing:
For consideration in this manual, gage numbers for Integra steel framing members refer to the following minimum base-metal thicknesses (Not including coatings): #14 gage / (1.9mm), #16 gage / (1.5mm), #18 gage / (1.2mm), #20 gage / (0.9mm), #22 gage / (0.8 mm). Integra Steel studs for shear walls must be a minimum of 38mm X 38mm tube/chord size, with a minimum nominal depth (152mm) with a maximum Integra WEB Clip spacing of 400mm center to center (for nominal 152mm thick Integra walls), and a maximum WEB Clip spacing of 500mm center to center (for nominal 228mm thick Integra walls) with a maximum of 100mm WEB Clip end spacing from the top or bottom of either a nominal 152mm or 228mm Integra stud.

    2.3 Integra Shear Wall Design:

    2.3.1 General:
Allowable pull-out and lateral loads for fasteners attaching wood-based structural sheathing of Plywood or OSB to Integra light-gage steel framing members are to be as specified in Table 1.

    2.3.2 Integra Shear Walls:

Fig: SW-1 Typical Integra Shear wall detail

The drawing Fig: SW-1 above indicates a typical Integra shear wall, note the left side of the wall section is a clear span of Integra studs (typically placed 600mm o.c.) and indicates only two shear anchors being required, where as the right hand side of the illustrated wall indicates four anchors being required, this is due to the window opening in the wall, whereby additional “X” bracing is required to meet the “X” bracing ratio requirements, also note that the Integra window lintel/header does not require “X” bracing, as the Integra WEB Clips form the shear brace requirement. The drawing below Fig: SW-2 indicates the %FH values for different Integra sheathed shear wall applications
