马瑙斯虽不是传统的足球圣地，但得益于亚马逊竞技场独特的个性，参加2014巴西世界杯必然会受到球迷们的欢迎，其前身为Vivaldao球场。
这个城市坐落世界上最大的热带雨林——亚马逊雨林的中心，翻新的球场被金属结构包围，外形像一个草篮，此灵感来自该地著名的特产。
球场项目将为可持续性发展提供重要的示范，发挥保护亚马逊雨林多样性的作用。例如，收集的雨水会后续用于洗手间或球场的浇灌上，充足的阳光将被用来生产清洁和可再生的能源。创建植物保护带也会降低能源成本，尤其能控制球场内温度。
亚马逊竞技场不但能容纳42377名观众，还有餐厅，地下停车场，专用巴士，单轨列车服务。该场地在2014巴西世界杯时将举办4场小组赛比赛。结束世界杯赛事后将会通过举办音乐会和文化活动以继续吸引游客。。
亚马逊竞技场是世界上第一座通过美国绿色建筑协会LEED标准认证的体育建筑。


Arena da Amazonia is the new football stadium that is currently being built in
Manaus, Brazil. Manaus, in the centre of the Amazon rainforest, has been chosen as
one of the 12 host cities for the 2014 World Cup. FIFA hopes that the new stadium
will attract thousands to the jungle of the Amazon.
亚马逊大竞技场是目前正在巴西玛瑙斯建造的新足球场。玛瑙斯市位于亚马逊雨林中心，已
被选为2014年世界杯12个主办城市之一。国际足联希望新体育场将吸引成千上万的人到亚马逊丛林。
The new stadium is being constructed built at the same site of the old one,
which, however, did not meet World Cu standards. A year before kick-off, a lot
remains needs to be done. The stadium is still in its raw state. There is no seating
and no grass on the pitch. Officials must finish most of the construction before the
rainy season starts in December.

The new arena will have room for 44,000 visitors. After the World Cup it will be
used for concerts, conferences and other events. Planners have concentrated on
making the Arena da Amazonia as sustainable to be used for a long time and
environment-friendly as possible. Rainwater is collected to supply water for the
pitch. Solar and wind power will be used to produce electricity power that is needed
for heating, light and other machines. The new stadium has a price tag of over $200 million.

Critics argue that spending so much for a football stadium is a waste of
taxpayers’ money. Traditionally, Manaus is not as football crazy as Rio de Janeiro
or Sao Paolo, where the big clubs reside. But organizers say bringing the World Cup
to Manaus is a unique to present the Amazon city to a worldwide audience. In
addition, the city will receive better infrastructure, new roads, public transport
and other facilities that it so desperately needs.

Manaus has a population of two million people and is situated not far from where the Amazon and the Rio Negro get together. Although it is isolated from other parts of Brazil, the city is an economic centre with the largest harbour on the Amazon River. Manaus had its heyday during the late 19th century when it was the centre of the rubber industry.
