This facility combines the functions of a modern public library with the components of a state-of-the-art central campus library. It includes a 200 seat multi-functional meeting room, conference and multimedia center, high tech classrooms, computer center, quiet and interaction rooms, as well as all the components of both public and academic libraries. Modeled after the architecture of an integrated circuit, the building provides insulation between disparate functions and promotes interaction and interconnection between like functions and spaces.

The building integrates the varied uses of a contemporary public library with the needs of an academic center, allowing for each to function both independently and collaboratively. The public functions occupy the ground floor, incorporating discrete areas the popular library and media collections as well as public meeting rooms, café and technical services. Secure courtyards allow for unfettered access to the exterior while maintaining the security of library materials. Careful attention is paid to the long term use of the building, an accessible flooring system allows for continual reorganization of the building. Overhead services are distributed by a continuous illuminated distribution element; accessible throughout its length for flexibility it provides the ambient lighting throughout the space. The articulated skin of weathering copper is designed to provide a naturally ventilating skin, and triple layered insulated clerestories provide a high performance enclosure.
