西班牙建筑设计事务所MX_SI将芬兰的serlachius博物馆进行了扩建，扩建工程使用的是木阁楼的建筑，木阁楼建筑的设计概念是“茂密又抽象的森林”。与地方署的Huttunen Lipasti Pakkanen建筑师一起进行项目工程，项目设计最后定型于2011年，项目的设计来源于一个公开的国际比赛，大赛有579份参赛作品。项目设计与决选名单上的其他三个建筑设计一起在芬兰颂建筑奖中获得了提名。博物馆以石化森林为背景，不仅拥有自己大胆的特色，还与周围的自然环境和谐的融合在了一起。

博物馆由层积的云杉木建筑制造，这样的建筑结构在这个地区很常见，博物馆大楼看起来像一系列重复的木翅片，这是建筑几何结构的钢框架。为了在新老建筑物之间建立强烈的联系，扩建部分的位置选择避免减损旧建筑或园景花园的任何一部分。博物馆的外部有一系列的垂直竖框，它们都遵从和着重体现建筑物的内部结构。建筑物外墙有通风系统，提供了一个与平面图完全不同的三维结构。

Spanish architectural studio MX_SI has extended Finland’s serlachius museum with a timber pavilion that has been conceptualized as a ‘dense, abstract forest’. Working alongside local office Huttunen lipasti pakkanen architects, the final design was chosen in 2011 as the result of an open international competition that attracted a record number of 579 entries. The project was also nominated for the inaugural Finlandia prize for architecture, joining three other schemes on a strong shortlist.Primarily, the new structure provides additional floor space for the contemporary art gallery, allowing the existing joennimei manor building to serve as the museum’s headquarters. Set against the backdrop of a petrified forest, the building carries its own bold identity, while simultaneously existing in harmony with its natural surroundings.

Constructed with laminated spruce wood, common to the local mantta region, the building appears as a series of repeated wooden fins that frames the structure’s geometry. Seeking to establish a strong dialogue between the old and new architecture, the extension is positioned so as not to detract from either the existing building or the landscaped gardens.Externally, a series of vertical mullions both follow and emphasize the rhythm of the interior structure, with a ventilated facade system that offers a three-dimensional texture that varies along the entirety of the elevation.
