1. Places, Streets and Movement: A Companion Guide to Design Bulletin 32 Residential Roads and Footpaths (DETR, 1998);
DB32 argues that an over-emphasis on the movement of vehicles results in lots of developments having the roads designed first, houses are fitted in around them. Thus they support the broader concepts of ‘places’ and ‘streets’, claiming that the relationship of buildings between each other should be paramount.
2. Planning Policy Guidance Note 3: Housing (DETR, 2000);
This policy has a clear and outstanding focus on design, with each charter adopting an entirely understanding of design as a method of making spaces. There is a general guidance on house planning, including a much more emphasis on brownfield development, higher-density development and so on.
3. By Design: Better Places to Live: A Companion to PPG2 (DLTR/CABE,2001).
By design is based on a set of objectives for urban design and emphasis on process and procedures strongly. Better Places to live focus on residential design advice. Therefore, the guide outlines a detailed examination of both historic and contemporary practice, identify many attributes of successful housing.
