The British Consulate-General is currently establishing a 6-person Climate Change & Energy Section as part of our growing network of Climate Change & Energy officers throughout China. The team is working to tackle one of the most important challenges facing the global community – how to avoid the catastrophic impacts of unchecked climate change. Through a programme of practical co-operation we aim to raise awareness about climate change and to promote specific action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Specific role and requirements
This officer will largely work independently to promote understanding of climate change and to scope for and develop projects on climate change and energy in southern China, in partnership with Provincial governments, business leaders, institutes, scientific and non governmental organisations (NGOs). The officer will have lead responsibility for our work with the power sector and on the economics of climate change. The officer will also be the chief technical adviser to the Climate Change & Energy team on climate change and energy issues, including input to our strategic planning.
We require an experienced professional in the climate change and energy field, such as related academic, government, NGO or industry experience. This is a busy, dynamic and challenging job so you will need to demonstrate sound judgement and excellent teamwork, communication and organisational skills. We will give you as much responsibility as you can take and as a fully integrated member of the UK Climate Change Network in China you will benefit from being at the forefront of British international policy and strategy development in relation to climate change and energy.
Essential requirements
As this position will require significant direct engagement with key government, academic and business contacts in southern China we are seeking a Chinese national, although non-Chinese nationals may be considered if they can bring an outstanding portfolio of experience to the role. Having an existing range of contacts in south China would be beneficial but is not essential.
You must be educated to degree level and have a high degree of fluency in Mandarin Chinese and English. Fluency in Cantonese would be an advantage.
Applications should be received by 9 February 2009. Only those applicants invited for interview will be contacted. The successful applicant will be expected to start work as soon as possible.
