Technology Breakthrough Enables Energy Efficiency of .448 KW/ton, 13.5% better than the next best chiller
Dakar, Senegal, December 16, 2005 – Trane announced today a new technological advancement for its EarthWise™ CenTraVac™ chillers establishing a 13.5 percent energy efficiency advantage over other best performing chillers. The new chillers reach energy efficiency of 0.448 KW/ton, based on the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI) standard rating conditions, which is significantly better than the best chiller as documented in the recently published IPCC/TEAP Report on Safeguarding the Ozone Layer and the Global Climate System – Issues Related to Hydrofluorocarbons and Perfluorocarbons.
“As the global community works to address the issues of global warming, ozone depletion and energy efficiency, we continue to see that the most balanced air conditioning solution to these environmental imperatives is the use of HCFC-123 in a Trane-designed centrifugal chiller,” said Jim Wolf, vice president of environmental policy for Trane. “Our systems offer significant energy advantages, are guaranteed to leak less than 1/2 percent of the refrigerant per year – which means near zero ozone depletion Impact, and importantly, significantly less greenhouse gases than centrifugal chillers using alternative refrigerants”.
“The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) welcomes this effort to raise the bar on energy efficiency”, said Rajendra Shende, Head, Ozone Action Branch - UNEP/DTIE, “All companies will want to improve the efficiency of their equipment to save energy costs and to support global commitments to safeguard the climate system by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality and protecting the ozone layer”. “UNEP uses its global Networks to spread the word on the latest environmentally sustainable technologies like this chiller”.
The Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute establishes test standards and certification programs used by all their members which represents more that 90 percent of U.S. produced central air conditioning and commercial refrigeration equipment.
