The massing started off with gently curved form which seeks to welcome the student body of Myongji University and harmonizes in its surrounding of residential area and other university facilities. The square mass was subsequently inserted to serve as the functional zones to contain the books. The curvilinear outer skin comes to life with U-GLASS, and the square mass is expressed with wood (IPE) that relates to the nature off books, paper, and bookshelves. U-Glass doesn’t directly reflect light, but filters light to create a warm and comfortable ambience; wood ages, similar to books, and archives the flow of time in its materiality.
We built a square box composed of nine smaller squares. The center square emerges to bring light from the heights of the vestibule. The classrooms are arranged in the surrounding squares.
This square structure is inscribed within a larger, circular enclosure made up of double circular walls. Open to the sky, four courtyards are created that suggest the four elements: air, earth, fire and water.
This prototype is built near Granite Falls, Washington, in the Cascade Mountains about 50 miles north east of Seattle. A second prototype is in the planning stages for an urban site in San Diego. This house is part of a series of projects that explore the opportunities for using prefabrication techniques and new building construction methods and materials to build low cost, high quality, site-adaptable and program-adaptable manufactured buildings.
The design includes a grand green roof that, although it seems to slope at quite a precarious angle, is accessible for people to walk on. The sweeping form surrounds two large facades that reveal the changing exhibitions inside the museum. These massive windows also flood the interior with daylight. As the two facades rise opposite each other, the roof lines connect to the ground and continue the existing park onto the actual building.
A residence built on a two-tiered site with a level difference of 3 meters. Because of the concern remained about the credibility of embankment and retaining wall built along the housing development, the foundation was laid on natural ground beneath the lower tier which was more reliable as the supporting stratum. The steel-made volume for public rooms floats over the retaining wall and above the upper tier for better view. Private rooms are arranged along the lower tier where the atmosphere is calm, at a distance from the front road, within a reinforced concrete structure which functions as a counterbalance to the overhanging volume.
3XNs visionary and empathetic winning proposal unites the Middelfart savings Bank’s high ambitions for their new head office. The building must ensure a perfect environment for the employees, while also positively stress demands for high architectural quality in the future development along the harbour front.
One large roof covers all functions in the building. The roof is a large elegant wooden structure with numerous openings. The openings bring in abundant amounts of daylight and allow for direct view of the sea from all places in the building, up and down. In this way, the light and friendly atmosphere sought for by the bank is achieved.
NL Architects‘ Blok K is part of a master plan for 500 dwellings in Amsterdam. The site’s triangular shape sits between the historic center and the recently redeveloped harbor area. The block measures 31 x 28 meters and is about 2.5 stories tall. According to the guidelines established in the master plan, it was obligatory to build the first two stories in alignment and the third story had to contain 50% roof terrace.
