The Festival Plaza Redevelopment is one Adelaide’s largest public realm projects in recent times.

A significant part of the Riverbank precinct master plan, the new plaza stitches together the formerly disparate parts of Adelaide’s major events and entertainment precinct.

At approximately two hectares in size, the plaza incorporates a main event space defined by a signature Australian stone paving design laid in a pattern that speaks to the modernist heritage of the Festival Centre.

The highlight of the square is the design of the pavilion.

The arbours provide shade, but they also deliver an architectural boldness that really catches the eye in one of Adelaide’s busiest public spaces.

When you first see them, it’s just ‘wow’!Looking at the plans, the arbours were amazing structures. But creating them wasn’t easy.“

Construction team set up a large jig in fabrication facility (essentially a stencil) where small sections of laser-cut steel beams were laid out to form each of the hexagonal panels before welding.

The team then repeated that process over and over, working double shifts, until there were enough hexagonal sections for each complete arbour.”
