Pinterest is a social media platform centered on finding inspiration. They are a top-3 unicorn company in the US as of February 2019, based in San Francisco. As a rapidly growing company, they have an urban campus concept – several headquarters buildings located near each other along a major road.

The award-winning workspaces are designed by the 2019 Smithsonian National Design Award winning firm, IwamotoScott Architecture, also based in San Francisco.
IwamotoScott’s designs for Pinterest have evolved with the company’s culture, moving from a start-up feel towards a more refined palette. Each speaks to the brand which promotes ideas of collaboration, visual inspiration, and authenticity. The inspiration for the designs also came from Founder, Evan Sharp, who asked that the spaces be “creative, not craftsy.”
Evan Sharp was originally trained as an architect at Columbia University prior to starting Pinterest with co-founder, Ben Silbermann. It was therefore very important that the project be more architectural than simply decorative. Lisa Iwamoto and Craig Scott, founders of IwamotoScott were up for this challenge as they are both trained architects, and also Professors of Architecture at The University of California Berkeley, and California College of the Arts, respectively.
The concept for the first PINTEREST HEADQUARTERS 1 begins with using humble materials in innovative ways. In response to the existing building for which the interiors are designed, the overall space has an industrial feel with a unique modern look.
For example, the diagonal waffle plywood ceiling welcomes visitors and slips through to a large front lounge that employees also use as a café.
IwamotoScott designed mobile furniture that creates pods for small group meetings, as well as rolls out of the way for larger team events. Some of the pieces are made of redwood salvaged from a local, recently demolished landmark, the Bay Bridge, bringing the history of San Francisco into the interior. The barrista is also located here and employees gather informally and work in this warm, inviting space throughout the day.
Adjacent to the café is the company’s dining and all-hands. Because this interior is within a pre-existing building, the idea is to mesh the old with the new. The structure and floors remain more exposed while new light-filled surfaces wrap the space.
New custom-cut white acoustic felt tiles create a dynamic ceiling pattern and the simple suspended lights brighten the otherwise light-challenged building.
Other areas such as the IT helpdesk and games area are wrapped with Douglas Fir plywood that celebrates Pinterest’s original start-up culture.
A centerpiece to the headquarters is a unique inter-communication stair. This sculptural element acts as the heart of the building. It guides circulation and brings light into the center of the building.
The stair has a secret as well. The two legs of the stair are interlocked to convey the connection to Pinterest’s brand principle of knitting. Knitting is how employees view collaboration and connection within the company. IwamotoScott translated this this idea into architecture. It has become a story employees can tell visitors and friends.

The stair is clad in two layers of perforated metal. It forms a luminous and diaphanous enclosure. During the day the stair volume refracts sunlight while at night it glows with integrated LED lighting. It is like a large lantern captured at the center of the building.
As well, large apertures form diagonal views and lookout points along the journey up the stair. It is a social space as well as a vertical communication element. The wood platform at the base of the stair also allows people to congregate and sit comfortably.
Inside is large enough for the chance encounters that are so valuable in tech workplace culture. It is a special experience that defines this headquarters building.
The idea of perforated light is also seen in the meeting rooms. This one has a custom CNC cut pattern that makes the room glow. Transparency is also very important to the design concept. This can be seen in see-through conference rooms like below. This strategy helps light filter throughout the space as well as allows views across the large floorplate.
Mesh curtains in a variety of colors create intuitive wayfinding for the different quadrants of the building and add a softness to the meeting rooms.
Unique installation features are sprinkled throughout. The one below folds out of the wall to create a small table to perch a laptop for impromptu meetings.
IwamotoScott also increased transparency by creating a unique glass corner condition at the intersection of meeting rooms. Instead of being in an enclosed box, each room has views to another and to the open workspace beyond. Understanding that many tech workers experience FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), this inventive solution let’s others see what is going on, while keeping acoustic privacy and limited views to the video content being displayed in each room.
And lastly for this first Pinterest Headquarters, the industrial qualities of the building materials are leveraged here to make a subtle and softly glowing lighting element for the ceiling. It is simply LED up-lights placed within standard metal joists. These types of innovative ideas can be found throughout the whole building and continues with the next project in New York.
PINTEREST NEW YORK FLAGSHIP is a Partner Center in the heart of Manhattan, New York. It is much smaller than the 10,000 sm Headquarters #1, but equally important as this is where client company partners come to visit Pinterest sales associates on the East Coast, USA. For this build-out, IwamotoScott took inspiration from the New York Public Library. Like the library, Pinterest is a visual catalog for people to share ideas. The welcome wall is a clever translation of this idea where “pins” of NY forming a map of Manhattan greets visitors.
As with the first HQ, the stair becomes a central design feature. The stair is also inspired by the New York Public Library famous scissor stair – it is a criss-cross and goes two directions.
This unique stair is wrapped in wood slats to create a striking visual centerpiece. It is a conversation starter for visitors and builds upon Pinterest’s desire to showcase communication. Traveling the stair is similar to being under a garden trellis. Special lighting makes soft shadows within that mimics the path of the sun throughout the day.
As a partner center, the Pinterest logo becomes an important element to display throughout the space. Here, the Pinterest Brand team created a variety of cool icons such as the one below made from books at the top of the stair, and the lighted historic sign.
Lastly, PINTEREST HEADQUARTERS 2 came online soon after Pinterest HQ1 and is located within easy walking distance. This interiors project was built together with the core and shell office building owned by Alexandria Real Estate Equities. Unique to this building, the double height lobby is designed both for employees and the general public. IwamotoScott therefore created a hybrid lobby space that functions as reception, extended collaborative work zone, and café seating. This was an important aspect of the design – to make all the real estate valuable for work throughout the day and be fully activated throughout the day.
Opening up to the lobby is a Pinterest run café called “The Point.” It is a white and bright space in contrast to the richer wood tones of the lobby. There is a custom designed light scaffold that hangs in the space and is again inspired by the industrial character of the neighborhood. Here however, the aesthetic is refined and streamlined while still conveying Pinterest’s workshop culture.
The pleated wood ceiling of the lobby has integrated lighting that provides an inviting atmosphere to the tall room. Suspended over this space is part of a long cascade stair that slices through the whole building and creates a dramatic overlook to the public lobby.
IwamotoScott’s idea behind the stair is that it acts like an internal street similar to San Francisco’s hilly roads. The cascade stair is also a vertical social spine. The kitchenettes on each floor are located at every landing and this is where people gather and informally collaborate.
One of the stops along this street is the dining and all-hands space.
Here, the team designed custom light fixtures that animate the ceiling and create dynamic edges.
Employees sit at long communal tables or along the comfortable booths that line the windows.
As with the other stairs, this one is also volumetric and because it is very visible at each level, encourages people to use the stair instead of the elevator.
As one can see, it is quite an unusual experience to be able to see through the entire building vertically.
Informal work spaces cluster around the stair at each floor. IwamotoScott also used wood on the floors and walls to soften the original concrete building shell.
Open lounge spaces off the corridors and open work areas are created by a clever use of paint. As one can see, the paint wraps the ceiling and the walls to define softer collaborative zones. It makes an interesting optical effect as one moves throughout the space.
there is also another internal street in the design. This one is horizontal, and forms connections between larger shared programs like the multi-purpose room and library. Displays of “pinners” line the walls, and change on a rotating basis. The library has a variety of furniture to allow people to work in a number of different seating postures.
In the multi-purpose room, IwamotoScott designed a custom ceiling made of non-woven fabric mesh that creates are really three-dimensional look. It’s functional too as it diffuses light and helps with the acoustics of the room.
And, lastly, being in San Francisco’s temperate climate, it’s always nice to be able to work outside as well. The rooftop terrace is designed as a series of small alcoves for employees to work and socialize after hours.
IwamotoScott Architecture is currently designing an exhibition pavilion of Chengdu Future Science and Technology City, which is expected to complete the construction in late 2021.
